Tips for Transitioning Your Skincare Routine this Fall/Winter

The air is getting crisp, the leaves are changing color, and pumpkin spice lattes are back at Starbucks. That can only mean one thing: fall is here! As the seasons change, so should your skincare routine. Here are a few tips to help you transition your skincare routine from summer to fall/winter.


1. Exfoliate Regularly

As we age, our skin cells turnover at a slower rate. This can lead to a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of our skin, which can make our skin look dull, dry, and rough. Exfoliating helps to slough off these dead skin cells, revealing the brighter, smoother skin beneath.

There are two types of exfoliation: physical and chemical. Physical exfoliation uses mechanical means to slough away dead skin cells (think scrubs and Clarisonic brushes). Chemical exfoliation uses enzymes or acids to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells and the surface of the skin (think AHA/BHA serums and peels).


2. Incorporate Moisturizing Ingredients into Your Routine

Once the weather starts to cool down, it’s important to incorporate more moisturizing ingredients into your skincare routine. Look for products that contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin, dimethicone, or shea butter. These ingredients will help to lock in moisture and prevent your skin from feeling dry and tight.


3. Use Sunscreen Year-Round

Even though there’s less sun in the fall and winter months, it’s still important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen year-round. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. And don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours if you’re going to be outdoors for an extended period of time!

4. Consider Adding a Humectant Into Your Routine

In addition to incorporating more moisturizing ingredients into your routine, you may also want to consider adding a humectant such as honey or aloe vera gel. Humectants work by drawing water into the surface of the skin, which can help to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day.
