Summertime is the perfect time to attend outdoor activities such as picnics, beach outings, and hiking with friends and family. But while we enjoy the great outdoors, we must also protect our skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Even if it’s cloudy outside, your skin is still exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunburn, skin aging, and skin cancer are some of the problems due to excessive sun exposure. Wearing sunscreen can reduce these risks. To ensure that you get the most out of your sunscreen, here are some do’s and don’ts when applying it.

Do Choose the Right Type of Sunscreen

Not all sunscreens are created equal. There are two types: physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens block the sun's rays by sitting on top of your skin's surface. They contain ingredients such as titanium oxide and zinc oxide. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, contain ingredients that absorb the UV rays before they reach your skin. Choosing the right type of sunscreen is critical before applying. A dermatologist can advise you on the best and safest options for your skin type.

Do Apply Sunscreen Properly

Applying sunscreen is easy, but it is important to be thorough. To get maximum protection, apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before going out and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. Be generous with the amount and don’t forget to apply on your ears, scalp, and neck. Use at least a shot glass of sunscreen to cover your entire body.

Don’t Use Expired Sunscreen

Sunscreen has an expiration date, and using one that’s expired can be less effective or may cause skin irritation. Don't use expired sunscreen, even if it looks and smells the same. Check the expiration date before buying sunscreen and discard it promptly after the expiry date.

Don’t Rely Solely on Sunscreen

Sunscreens provide an extra layer of protection but are not enough to keep us safe from the sun. Wearing protective clothing such as hats with wide brims, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts can also provide extra protection. The worst time to be outside is when the sun's rays are the strongest, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Do Reapply Sunscreen

Reapplying sunscreen is essential, especially if you are sweating or are going for a swim. If you are going to spend an entire day outdoors, apply your first coat at least 15-20 minutes before going out, and then reapply sunscreen every two hours. If you are swimming or sweating, reapply sooner. Don't forget to reapply sunscreen on your neck, ears, and hairline.

Summertime should be a time to relax and enjoy with family and friends, but we must also protect our skin from the sun’s harmful rays. We can do this by following the above do’s and don’ts when applying sunscreen. Remember to choose the right type of sunscreen, apply sunscreen properly, don’t use expired sunscreen, don’t rely solely on sunscreen, and don’t forget to reapply. By following these simple tips, you can enjoy the sun, and protect your skin from sun damage.
